Do you Identify as a Highly Sensitive Person?

Do you Identify as a Highly Sensitive Person?

Susie Sierra

A Highly Sensitive Person (HSP) is a term originally coined by psychologist Elaine Aron in her book of the same name. It describes someone who experiences life more vividly and deeply than most.

HSPs often have a rich imagination and an inner life that is beautifully complex. With heightened sensitivities, they can be profoundly moved by the beauty of the world around them — especially in Nature. Many artists, writers, and creatives fall into this category, drawn to expressing the depth of their experience.

Because of their empathic nature, HSPs may experience feelings almost as colours, sounds, or textures — engaging all the senses. Research suggests that up to 20% of the population is genetically predisposed this way.

Of course, being extra-sensitive also has its challenges. Crowds, bright lights, or noisy environments can feel overwhelming. HSPs need space to restore — often finding balance through solitude, walking in nature, or gentle practices such as meditation.

Signs you may be an HSP:

  • You are less driven by external rewards like promotions or social status, and more motivated by meaning and authenticity.
  • You may have highly active “mirror neurons,” which allow for deep empathy and compassion.
  • Shopping centres, crowds, or overstimulating environments leave you feeling drained.
  • You rely naturally on intuition when assessing people or situations — often reading others with great accuracy.
  • You cherish solitude and need more quiet time than most to rebalance your emotions.

Being a Highly Sensitive Person is not a weakness — it is a gift. With awareness and care, sensitivity becomes a powerful way of living: one that is attuned to beauty, creativity, and the wisdom of Nature.

Susie, Yes I agree I feel it is a privilege to be a “Highly Sensitive Person” we experience a deeper level of emotions and we can really celebrate the people in our life and the challenges that sometimes come. Plus the internal and external vibration of loving kindness which we transmit to all on the planet.Be Love and be Loving.
